Frontier completed a busy weekend of recruiting, rehearsing and performing. By the
end of the weekend no less than six new faces had joined the corps and nearly completed the
search for 2008 performers. A nearly full staff was in town and the show began to
look like a drum corps show!
Saturday was a beautiful day of sunshine, 75 degrees and mild winds. The corps was
able to relearn the first half of the opener with the solidified brass numbers. The
drum line and color guard joined the brass and learned much of the opener. The corps
spent some time working on music in sectionals and then performed in public for the first time
in 2008. The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival saw the debut of the corps with selections
from the 2008 show (“Ride” and “I’ll Be Seeing You”), the parade tune of “Vehicle”
and a revisit of 2007’s “Born to Be Wild”. The show was well received by friends
and family as well as those seeing the corps for the first time.
Sunday’s weather was not nearly as pleasant. The morning started with a mild rain,
temperatures in the upper 40’s and a bit of a stiff breeze. Since it’s drum corps,
rehearsal was not called off. The corps dug in and put more of the opener drill on the
field. By the end of the day, the opener of “Ride” was completely on the field.
The corps is moving and there will be plenty of eye candy for audiences this summer.
With lots of integration, the show should HAVE some wow moments that are quite memorable.
After lunch the brass read through the new closer. The Michael Buble tune “Home” is
replacing “Scootin on a Hardrock.” It was apparent that the music would be a good fit
for not only the show, but the performers! It is an opportunity to show off a nice brass blend
and allow the corps to finish the show with a strong showing. There are more changes to the
music, but it was very apparent what the staff had in mind and most expressed thanks for a new closer.

The modified uniform for the corps proper was displayed over the weekend. (See
photo to the left.) Chris Smith completed
the design and had a mock up for all to view. It too was a breath of fresh air and will provide
the corps a cleaner and crisper look this summer.

For those guard and pit percussion still on the fence, Frontier can still use your talent. However,
for the first time in the history of the corps, the brass line is set and the line is full prior to the summer!
A couple of high brass instruments could be inserted into the show if the fit is right, but going
forward, the line is set and Frontier will work to present a challenging and entertaining show. If
the drill that was put on the field is an indication of the rest of the show design and enthusiastic performance,
the 2008 edition of Frontier will be a fun “ride.”
